Writing Quote Wednesday: Don’t Give Up
Todays’ quote is from a Publisher’s Weekly article last week after Katherine Applegate won the Newbery for THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN:
“Fittingly, Applegate notes, she recently found a scrap of paper, something she had written a few years ago. On it were the words, ‘Should I give up on Ivan or not?’ She says, ‘I was at one of those many places you get to in a book, where I say, ‘I just can’t make it work.’ For some reason this piece of paper stuck around. I’m going to have it framed.'”
Ms. Applegate just won the Newbery! She’s also the best-selling author of the Animorphs series and other stand-alone titles. If she can feel desperation about a project, then that should give the rest of us hope–hope that we can keep writing when it’s not going well.
I read THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN last summer. It’s a moving story that is written so lyrically. If you haven’t read it, treat yourself to this book. It will stay with you a long time.
