Writing Quote Wednesday: Interesting Finds
“There is not a sprig of grass that shoots uninteresting to me…”
—Thomas Jefferson
March has been my month of Virginia history. It wasn’t intentional, but after looking back on three trips to various parts of Virginia, I realize I’ve coming across a lot of interesting finds.
I went to a writing conference in a historic Virginia hotel in Luray. Then I took 75 fourth graders to Monticello, Ashlawn-Highland, and UVA for tours. I’m always amazed that after going on this field trip 10 times I learn something new, something that piques my curiosity, every time.
Then my husband and I went to historic Lexington, VA for our anniversary and went on walking tours that included Stonewall Jackson’s House, Washington & Lee and VMI campuses (and their museums), and Stonewall Jackson cemetery.
Jefferson had an eye for detail and he was interested in so many subjects. Dabbling in new ideas and new plants fascinated him. Even Jackson loved gardening and helped can his own vegetables.
As a writer, being open to even that “sprig of grass” opens up a world of writing possibilities.
