What I’m Reading
by Maria Gianferrari
Illustrated by Jieting Chen
Maria Gianferrari was generous enough to send me an F&G of ICE CYCLE that comes out on October 4.
I love a good science poetry book and this one does not disappoint! This book is a poetry collection of all different types of ice.
Maria is a master of fabulous word choice. This whole book could be a study in strong verbs.
Things teachers could use this book for in the classroom:
- Word Choice–especially VERBS!
- States of matter
- Water cycle
- Turning science concepts into beautifully written poetry
I normally am not a fan of winter, but I anticipate writing some icy poems with students while in the midst of icy weather.

What an amazing close up of a bee! I love the word sashay. Thanks for the book review as well. Happy Friday!

Thank you, Margaret!

Strong verbs. Yes! I look forward to learning about all the kids of ice. Meanwhile let’s all sashay. 🙂

I’d love to read “Ice Cycle.” I’ll look for it. Great picture to complement your haiku. I imagine that bee is heavy for that petal so must tread gingerly!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
For sure! I saw a lot of bees that had to be careful on those petals!
Linda
I’ve been enjoying your haiku! You’ve chosen the perfect image for each of them. Also, I look forward to Maria’s new book. Thank you for sharing it here!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thank you so much, Linda!

My first thought when I saw the bee: Is it licking the good stuff (like a frosted wooden spoon)?
I’m so curious now to see if Maria’s ice poems include “water-ice.” I learned this was a real thing – in the search for life on Mars- from my son’s graduate thesis. I was proofreading it and kept questioning “Do you mean water or do you mean ice?” and he finally explained it to me!

I’ve been doing some ice research for another project and am so fascinated!

Yes! Let’s all sashay!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Great word, right?

Most enjoyable bee-sashay, and it’s always good to learn about new science poetry books!

I adore science poetry!

Love your haiku. And that photo is just gorgeous.
Thank you for sharing Ice Cycle. I’m definitely adding it to my TBR pile.

It’s such a great book by one of my favorite authors and edited by one of my favorite editors!

I’ve taken a lot of bee photos, love watching them, now will think of your ‘balancing act’ Marcie & watch for that! The book looks like lots of fun. I’ve always been intrigued by that hotel in Iceland made of ice. It looks cozy! : )
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Yes, ice is so fascinating (as are bees!).

“Sashay” would be a great word for a definito (can you tell I’ve read a lot of definitos this week?). I love the juxtaposition of the fluffy bee and the slender, frail-looking petal. Some balancing acts are a bit magical!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
I definitely need to try writing a definito!
Linda Mitchell
ooooh, yes! A good science poetry book. Will be seeking this one out. Thanks!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
It’s fabulous!!

Marcie, I was also observing a bee sashaying around a flower recently. Your photo and poem are right on target from what I saw. Great job with this haiku.

Thank you, Carol!
