Poetry Friday October 28, 2022: Nocturne Poems as Picture Books
Jone is our Poetry Friday Roundup host this week. Hop on over there to see what others are writing about.
Nocturne Poems as Picture Books
A nocturne poem is a poem set at night.
Examples of adult Nocturne poems:
After our Nevermores Poetry group wrote nocturne poems for our weekly poetry prompt, I wanted to explore this form in picture books. Many of these picture books are poems or are lyrical books about night.
If You Were Night by Muon Thi Van, illustrated by Kelly Pousette
The House in the Night by Susan Marie Swanson, illustrated by Beth Krommes
Nocturne by Jane Yolen, illustrated by Anne Hunter
The Night is for Darkness by Jonathan Stutzman, illustrated by Joseph Kuefler
Moon Wishes by Guy and Patricia Storms, illustrated by Milan Pavlović
Moonbeam: A Lullaby of the Phases of the Moon by Ann Bausum, illustrated by Kyung Eun Han
What other nocturne poems as picture books have I missed?

I never thought about picture books created around a nocturne poem, as a kind of genre. How interesting! Thanks for the suggestions. I enjoyed the Lee and Gluck poems, both rather spooky, especially the Lee poem and the unnamed sound coming out of the dark.

I’m a big fan of poems as picture books in general, so sometimes I go looking for subcategories. 🙂

Te He, love that “announcement heard by the ants”, Marci. And I noted all the picture books, all new to me. You would like “Flashlight Night” by Matt Forrest Esenwine, I think, another lovely night adventure.

Oh yes! Such a great one!

Thank you for sharing this list. I haven’t thought about nocturne poems as picture books. I can’t wait to read this with a new eye.

What a great book stack. Thank you so much!
Is the trumpeting red why the ants ‘go marching?’ Love it!

Thank you!

Wonderful haiku, Marcie. Those flowers aren’t just trumpeting for the heck of it! Moonlight, by Helen Griffith and Laura Dronzek, is a favorite of mine. Haven’t read it in years and will have to re-check it out, in fact. :>)

I will check it out from the library!

Such a great list of “nocturne” PBs — I hope someday to add my own to this list!
Marcie, I LOVE the RED in your haiku. It demands to be taken notice – so perfectly paired with “trumpet”.

Same–I hope I’ll get to publish a nocturne book one day.

Thanks for sharing these nocture poem picture books–most are new to me!
And I love how vivid your haiku is, Marcie, both the image and the words. Marvelous!

Awesome! I hope you’ll enjoy reading some of them.

Marcie, thanks for sharing your book list/stack for us to read. Your haiku is as imaginative as others you’ve written. I like the ending of your haiku
