Poetry Friday: Newly Published Poems
Heidi at my juicy little universe is hosting today.
Newly Published Poems
The Dirigible Balloon is a UK based poetry repository perfect for sharing with students. I have three new poems published on the site.
Teacher Useletter
I’m publishing my teacher use-letter once a month during the school year. My March edition (coming out on March 15) will include lots of Poetry Month resources for teachers and librarians.

What I’m Reading
by Laura Purdie Salas
Illustrated by Elly MacKay
Bloomsbury, 2023
Kids love thunderstorms–at least reading about them. Any kind of extreme weather is always a big hit. Laura Purdie Salas’ lovely rhyming text brings the thunderstorm’s story to life. It could fit into a weather unit or a poetry unit.
What I’m Noticing
Crocuses! I don’t know where they came from? But there are here—in random places—and they are a joy.

Congratulations on your poems, Marcie! And yes to crocuses. When I see them, I know that spring is not far behind.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Yes! We’ve lived here 8 years and these are the first crocuses I’ve seen (and we didn’t plant them). I’m just wondering where they came from. 🙂
Irene Latham
Abuzz-huzzing! Love! Congratulations on all this joy, Marcie. xo
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thank you, Irene!

Marcie,
“Do you ever wonder if the spider is sent out by them all—” Yes, I may have wondered something like that before!
I love those soggy mopheads in the photo, perfect metaphor for them. Congratulations to you for the poems being published!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thank you, Denise!

Congratulations on the newly published poems! And hooray for crocuses (ours were starting to pop up, and are now waiting under snow again.)
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
March is so moody, right? It keeps threatening snow here too, but I’m pretty sure we won’t get any.

Congratulations for the publishing, Marcie, & sorry for the soggy mopheads, though it’s a fun way to describe. Send some rain our way, please!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
We’ve had a lot of rain — and WIND. Yuck!

Congrats on your Dirigible Balloon poems, Marcie!
I love those drooping blooms, too. They look like silly-string messes 🙂
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Silly string! Yes, they do.
Laura Purdie Salas
I already commented somewhere on your terrific nonet. Now I read the Tadpole Twist–I love your clever rhyme scheme and structure in there! You are so inventive, Marcie. Thanks, too, for the Zap! Clap! Boom! shoutout. xo
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thank you, Laura! And I can’t wait to share Zap! Clap! Boom! with students!

Marcie, I just finished reading your published poems and they are wonderful. Congratulations on that. It’s hard to believe that you are teaching and writing at the same time but I am so glad that you continue to debut your recent haikus to us. I did devote two slides of your work during my recent PD program on Zoom for the reading specialist group on Long Island. I hope they visit your site and use your resources. I really love your January poem. The photo goes so well with the word mopheads. I definitely see the resemblance.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Carol, Thank you so much for sharing with teachers about my work. That’s so kind of you. Teaching, writing, parenting can all be challenging to juggle at the same time. I do a little bit each day and it adds up over time.

Congratulations on the publications, Marcie. And that’s another fine haiku! Mopheads indeed.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thank you so much, Susan!

Congrats on your publications, Marcy! I look forward to your newsletter, too. Love your haiku (as always!). I resemble those ‘mopheads’ when I get caught in a downpour. 😉
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thank you so much!

eek, aplogies for misspelling your name, Marcie!

No worries! 🙂

Marcie, congratulations on your DB publications! I particularly like “Under the Rock” with its last knowing question. Your “Useletter” sounds great–I will go and check it out soon!

Thanks, Heidi!
