What I’m Reading
by K.A. Hays
My Nevermores poetry group wrote lullabies a few weeks ago and I was trying to find some different examples. I started reading this book because it had an example, and I just kept reading for my 3 a day poetry routine.
What I’m Noticing
Forsythia! It’s been super rainy, then super cold and windy. I’m glad for a day of sunshine which I caught these bright spots.

Love the sound of “bejeweled.” I hope that little guy stays cozy.

Thank you! I hope he found some shelter!

That’s an actual real caterpillar? He’s got a lot of fuzz for such little guy; sparkles and all.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Yep. Totally real. As soon as I saw him, I braved the cold rain to snap some pictures. 🙂
Denise Krebs
Marcie, that caterpillar is precious, all bejeweled with rain drops.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thank you! I couldn’t pass him by without taking a picture.

That caterpillar is looking very chilly in his jewels. Nice haiku & portrait.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thank you!

Oh, there is so much emotion in “bejeweled” and “far from home”.
And I love forsythia bright!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thank you, Patricia!

Oh my, Forsythia! I have only seen a few buds thus far. Oh, the caterpillar must be moving very slowly. I’m glad you gave it some attention.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Yes, he was not moving much that day. But he was gone the next day, so I hope he found some shelter.
Sarah Grace Tuttle
Hooray for forsythia! I’m looking forward to when ours are in bloom. Thanks for sharing Marcie!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Yes, I love the pops of yellow.

Marcie, great photo to accompany your poem. Your furry little friend looks like it is in need of some gentle ‘defrosting.’ Bejewelled is such an apt descriptor here. May spring bring more delights and sights as it rolls out.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thanks! I’ve really enjoyed noticing lots nature tidbits.

Poor little caterpillar! Although, it would seem that the bristles catch the rain so that it doesn’t get all the wait to its…skin? It’s not caterpillar season here just yet, but I did see a bee on my newly planted hellebores a couple of weeks ago when we had some false-spring weather. I hope bee found a warm place to hide during this current cold snap!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
I know! I do worry about the up and down temperatures.

I don’t think I’ve ever felt more sympathy for a caterpillar!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
I know. Me too. Not much will lure me out into a cold rain, but this little guy did.

That lil’ fella prickles my fancy! Your haiku hits the mark, Marcie. 🙂

Thank you, Bridget!

I’ve never seen such a photo! It’s hard to imagine how big it really is, though it’s definitely cold. I just read your “about” page, about your growing up in Thailand which must give you a different perspective even on topics such as caterpillars.

Yes, the flora and fauna of my childhood is vastly different from the flora and fauna of my adulthood.
