Poetry Friday: Moon Poem + Parks and Books
Irene Latham is our wonderful host this week. Go check out the roundup. She’s asked us to post moon poems in order to usher in her new book THE MUSEUM ON THE MOON: THE CURIOUS OBJECTS ON THE LUNAR SURFACE (coming in August).
Haiku of the Week
Here is my moon poem offering:
moon calls to sea
she speaks in watercolors
in the gloaming

More Parks and Books
This week I went to Pohick Bay Regional Park. This is a park run by many of the surrounding counties and is down the road from a state park.
Here is the view of the bay. I went on a weekday and I had the trails and the view to myself. I also managed to get lost–thankfully, I had a cell signal so I could figure out where I was.
I also found this moth suspended from a spider silk (or so it seemed).
I visited the newly renovated Lorton Library. It was abuzz with lots of kids. Here’s the stack of books I brought home.
I also hung out with some writer friends in a neighboring county, so I decided to go to a park and a library that is on the way. I went to Lake Fairfax. The air quality was poor, so I wore my N95, and I didn’t stay long.
There were lots and lots of insects. This guy really stood out on the green leaves.
I also went to Reston Library and was super impressed with their poetry selection–both for kids and adults.
What I’m Reading
I’m a big fan of Maggie Smith’s poetry, and this is such a poetic memoir (though not a memoir in verse). The structure is so interesting. I love it when authors play with unique structure.
What I’m Noticing
Y’all the deer have eaten so much of my garden and now they’re munching on my flowers. They ate up my pansies. My Ring doorbell caught them munching my begonias. I had two separate pots of them, and they were gorgeous. Now they are stubs. They’ve munched on just about everything this year.
Hosting Next Week
Come back next week. I’ll be hosting Poetry Friday and giving you a sneak peek into my Sealey Challenge for this year.

She speaks in watercolors!! I love that line so much, Marcie! Thanks for joining the moon party. Looking forward to next week. xo

Thank you! I loved seeing all of the amazing moon poems gathered together. What an awesome resource it will be for teachers!

I also love the line “she speaks in watercolors.” I love this little peek into your summer days. Sorry about the deer eating all your plants. They are just too precious to get too angry about, though. Deer poem? We don’t have deer, but we have a family of raccoons eating all the catfood. Our cats do not seem to mind.?
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
LOL Deer poem. It might be an invective! 🙂

Gloaming is one of the best words ever! And maybe don’t think of yourself as a gardener. You’re a wildlife manager, helping deer stay fed. :>D
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Wildlife manager. 🙂 I’ll add it to my byline. Also, “gloaming” is a sneak preview to my twilight book. I use the word there too.

Wow! What a photo of the ocean with pink-tinged waves! Watercolors, indeed!
And I’m so impressed that you’re already thinking Sealey thoughts! If Clint Smith’s new one ABOVE GROUND isn’t on your stack, I recommend it!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
So glad you liked Clint Smith’s new book. It’s not part of my Sealey Challenge, but I will definitely add it to my stack for this year.

Marcie, I am having issues with adding my comment. This is the 3rd try and I hope I succeed with the placement. I want to let you know that your summer swap package arrived to my delight. I plan on sharing your work at next week’s Poetry Friday. I also want to let you know that this has been a difficult month with many to dos. I fell behind and the swap I have for you is still in the production phase. I hope I can finish it soon to send to you. Your haiku is beautiful in thought and image: Moon “speaks in watercolors”. Thanks for taking us on your library tour. I hope to find time to go to libraries this summer. It is a home away from home that I loved since childhood.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
You succeeded! But I’m so sorry for the commenting trouble. I was having trouble commenting on others’ posts last week too. Not sure what’s going on.

Your posts are always full of wonderful tidbits, Marcie. I absolutely love the word “gloaming” and so glad you used it!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thank you! The word “gloaming” is a sneak peek to my twilight picture book coming out. 🙂

I love the idea of the moon speaking to the sea in watercolors. That’s a great photo and the haiku fits it perfectly. Good luck with the deer. We live smack dab in the middle of suburbia and have to contend with groundhogs, deer, chipmunks, squirrels, and rabbits. Who knows what else! Those are just the ones I see on the regular.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
I’m in suburbia too (DC metro) and it’s shocking the amount of wildlife I run into on a daily basis.

watercolor gloaming! the pastels in the surf! of course you wrote that haiku!
I’m so sorry you lost so much of your plant-life to those adorable deer! 🙂
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
LOL, I don’t find them too adorable. Sometimes, there’s a family of deer in my yard and I’ve had them stamp at me when I get out of my car to go into my house!

Your haiku are always special, but this one is next level, Marcie. Whopper words (gloaming, speaking in watercolors, oh my!) intensify the gravitational pull for us readers.
Again, your photography…wow. 🙂
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thank you so much, Bridget. That’s very kind!

(for some reason my first comment disappeared…so I’m trying again)
I always love your haiku, Marcie, but this week’s is next level! Whopper words (gloaming, speaking in watercolors) intesify the gravitational pull for us readers. And your photography…wow. 🙂
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
I got both. 🙂 I’m not sure what’s going on with comments. I wish I knew the magic button to make it not be so tricky for people.
Michelle Kogan
How enchanting your poem and image are, and you painted twilight with watercolors, ahhh! Thanks for taking us along to all your park and library stops, what a treat!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thank you, Michelle!

Swoon: “she speaks in watercolors”.
I love this.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Oh, thank you! 🙂
