Poetry Friday: Monarchs
New Poem
I have a haiku coming out in this new poetry anthology about monarchs. I also see some other poetry friends among the contributors.

What I’m Reading
Edited by Tess Taylor
What I’m Noticing
I gave most of my monarch caterpillars to the teachers at my school. One hooked its chrysalis under our deck railing. On Wednesday morning, I checked the chrysalis and I knew it would be emerging soon. By the the time I got home, it was fully emerged.

Hi Marcie! You are flying high with the majestic monarchs. Appreciations for your contributing to a poem-making cause on their behalf. I am enchanted by this chapbook idea, & both the front artwork & back cover of words [where Michelle Kogan’s quoted, too] How wonderful is this world!

Thanks, Jan!

Congrats on being in FLY! You are clearly a monarch admirer. Gorgeous photos. Your turtle makes me feel calm, too.

Thank you, Tabatha!

Your monarch photos are stunning Marcie! And congrats on being part of another anthology. Your turtle haiku brings to mind Turtle in July by Marilyn Singer, a favorite of mine for the classroom.

Oh I don’t know Turtle in July. Will look it up.

Marcie,
Now that is a book I must have. ! Where do I pre-order that will be most beneficial for the authors – contributors? As I think you know I’ve devoted most of the last two decades to monarch conservation! I’m sure I’ll love this book! And if you don’t mind me asking, where did you see or hear of the call for submissions to this anthology?
Congratulations on your poem publication in the book and the birth of your monarch. Thank you for sharing your caterpillars with classroom teachers!

Hi Carol, I think it’s only available on Amazon. Here is the link for submissions for their anthologies and contests: https://heyheybookspublishing.com/submissions/ I think I may have seen it on Twitter/X, though I’m not 100% sure. I keep a running list of places to submit.

It seems hard to remember that we wanted to be cool only a few weeks ago, love your turtle musings. And congratulations for your poem’s publishing, Marcie!

So true about the heat. And thank you for your kind words!

Marcie, congratulations on having your book published in “Fly”. The teachers in your school must be excited to have monarchs come from your care. I do like your turtle haiku. If you have a haiku image poem on the last days of summer let me know if you would like to showcase it on my Destination: Summer’s End Padlet.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Oh, I will check. I’m still mining my photos from the summer.

Yay, Marcie! You’re haiku master! Love all of your monarch pictures as well.

Thank you! It was a fun week for the monarchs.

Congrats on the anthology, Marcie! I re-read your post and am pondering the long, slow emerging of your monarch. And your photos would suggest it didn’t just fly away immediately – taking its time all day, maybe waiting for you to return? 🙂

I know it emerged between 10:30am and 3:45pm. I had come home at 10:15 to check on a sick kiddo and it was still inside the chrysalis. When I got home, it was drying its wings. Then within 1/2 hour, it was moving along. So glad it waited for me!!!

Your photos are beathtaking! Your calm turtle reminded me of a story on NPR yesterday about turtle being resilliant so far to humans on the planet, but now with climate change they are struggling and in danger. Such interesting and old creatures.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Oh! So interesting. I also just got Sy Montgomery’s new turtle book in the mail this week!
Linda
Congratulations on your poem publication. Your photos of monarchs are gorgeous! Thank you for sharing them!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thank you so much, Linda!

Wonderful news about the anthology! You and your camera are a powerful team. I love what you captured with your words– turtle exudes calm for sure.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thank you, Karen! I still feel like such a novice with the camera (and the haiku).

Marcie, more fun here then the proverbial barrel of monkeys! I always look forward to your posts. I was here this afternoon, and I got sidetracked on monarchs. I found a way to order milkweed seeds, and maybe they will even grow in the desert. Then I ordered Fly so I’ll have a copy right away when it’s released. Your photos are beautiful, as usual. Thanks for sharing so much love in your posts.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Oh yay! I had no success growing milkweed from seeds this year. Then I read you are supposed to plant them in the fall. So, I’ll try that in a few weeks and see if they pop up in the spring.
