Poetry Friday: Haiku Giveaway
Haiku Calendar Giveaway
I made a 2024 calendar of never-before-seen haiku and photos. I usually give them as gifts to editors and critique partners. But I saved one to use as a giveaway for Poetry Friday.
Use this Google Form to enter . I’ll choose a random winner on Tuesday, December 19.
Poetry Love
Buffy Silverman and I were paired up for the holiday poetry exchange. I sent her a copy of the above calendar. She sent me so many gems–including a found poem made from the words from WAIT, REST, PAUSE.
These beautiful dried flowers are also from Buffy. I adore spent blooms. I often bring them in for my windowsill. These are going on my writing desk though.
And this gorgeous Gwen Frostic print
Many thanks for this beautiful holiday gift!
This week, I also got to meet on Zoom with the Nevermores and plan for 2024. I’m so proud of our commitment to poetry! Check out the gorgeous Raven bookmark Rose sent me. It’s made by Robyn Hood Black.
Writerly Links
Last weekend, I was in the house alone, for the first time in a long time. I stumbled across two writerly things in my quiet time that you might enjoy:
- “Turn Every Page” A documentary about the relationship between Robert Caro, the writer, and his lifelong editor, Robert Gottlieb. It’s on Amazon Prime. One of my favorite lines is when Gottlieb talks about writing books as “making public your own enthusiasm.” That is what I aim to do in my work.
- Commonplace Podcast had a lovely interview with Laurel Snyder where they talk about poetry and picture books. I definitely recommend if you are like me and write in the crossroads of poetry and picture books.

What I’m Reading
by Matt Bell
If I ever sell a book after only three drafts, then I will celebrate. It doesn’t seem practical for me. But this title is deceiving. It really does give practical advice for writing a novel.
What I’m Noticing
I took a morning walk last weekend with my camera—something I haven’t done in weeks, sadly. It was cold, but the frost on everything was beautiful.

A bountiful post Marcie–there is gratitude oozing from every corner. Not sad for your cold walk either! Those berries belong in Rose’s “Winter Red”!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
They DO belong in Rose’s “Winter Red”!

Loved reading this today! I signed up for your newsletter and look forward to new posts. So many things in common ~ nature photography, making a photo-filled calendar, haikus (I have ms with a porcupine who enjoys nature and haikus), and a love of Gwen Frostic. If you haven’t been to her studio here in Michigan, then I encourage you to do so if you’re up this way. Thank you for all your words this beautiful morning.

Alone in the house? Sorry, I no longer remember what that’s like :>D Thanks for the beauty here. I sent myself several notes of things to watch, listen to, and read/re-read.

LOL, I pretty much think this hasn’t happened to me in 19 years. I have left the house to go out of town, but to be by myself in my own house–doesn’t happen.

I love every piece of nature you share, Marcie, & the words, “flower fluffs”, most beautiful with the real thing. Thanks for sharing Buffy’s gifts, too, wonderful!
