What I’m Reading
edited by Melissa Stewart
NCTE, 2020
I’m rereading this book for a book study I’m leading for other nonfiction writers in Inked Voices. While this book is written for teachers, there is much to learn from the writers’ essays.
One of my favorite quotes from the book comes from Sarah Albee: “Writing epiphanies are not random.”
What I’m Noticing
Dandelions
I got a new macro lens and I’m learning to use it. Full disclosure: I’m currently terrible at it. But I loved this picture I took of a dandelion’s insides in my yard.

A macro lens! What fun, and a new learning experience that will lead to happy new places…love that golden girl, too. xo

Yes, and I’m bringing my macro lens to Highlights! 🙂

Golden girl – lovely. How fun to work with a new lens! I’m sure you’ll master it in no time.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
It does take practice, but that’s part of the fun!

Both of your “golden girls” are lovely! Macro lenses are so much fun!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
They are! I think I might need a class though.

Marcie, it is exciting to play with a new lens and look at what it can do. That dandelion that is magnetized, is a splendid close look. I found a dandelion in my yard and just marveled at its beauty (even thought it is a weed). Have fun.

Dandelions are awesome!

What fun to start discovering new things with the macro lens, love the gold you’ve shared. I have not seen a dandelion yet!

We have seen a few, but our yard isn’t overrun yet.

I love that winter bobbing bloom called “golden girl” Oh, my! Beautiful!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thank you!

I love the choices of bobs and girl–it’s brimming with life, even though the bloom is on its way out. Love.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thank you, Laura!

Marcie, your “currently terrible” photo is gorgeous, I imagine in the way that vinyl music lovers adore the pops and crackles that you don’t get on antiseptic digitial recordings. I’m also amused by how, in my mind, your winter-aged bloom is *called* Bob! Happy NPM!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
LOL the verb not the name. 🙂 But Bob could be a golden girl!

Ok, if that is “terrible” you will frighten me when you become “proficient”!
I dropped my phone today and the screen cracked and now the phone is doing things on its own. I have an appt tomorrow at the genius bar. My husband thinks a new screen will fix everything. I secretly hope I get a new phone so I can get the iphone that will take pics as good as your “terrible” ones!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Secretly wishing you get a new phone! My husband recently went to the Verizon store to ask for some assistance and came home and told me that I needed to get the new iPhone. 🙂 I did it–for the camera, of course.

Seed pods are fascinating, and “golden girl” is a perfect way to describe them. I’m curious about your macro lens. Can’t wait to hear more about it. Sarah Albee recently visited our school. She was amazing and so inspiring!

Sarah is so great! I love her books! I’ve been using a cheap clip-on macro lens on my phone, but this dandelion picture was taken with a new OM Systems macro lens–a present to myself when I got paid for some writing.
