Poetry Friday: More Poetry Odds and Ends
Karen Edmisten is hosting today, so head over there for the complete roundup.
Poetry Odds and Ends
It’s Poetry Month and I’ve been doing poetry stuff all week! I’ve been at Highlights at a poetry workshop with Irene Latham and Charles Waters. Fellow Poetry Friday poets (and Nevermores friends, Rose Capelli and Patricia Franz were also there). I hit the ground running when I got home, so I’ll post more about it next week!
Progressive Poem
This week, I added to the Poetry Friday crew’s progressive poem. Here is my post from Day 18.
To keep reading the additional lines, you can see the schedule on Margaret’s blog (scroll down on the right side for the schedule).
Poetry Video
My poem “I’m Not a Scary Spider” was featured on Jone Rush MacCullough’s blog. Some of her college students have been making videos with our poems.
I’m Not a Scary Spider
by Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Why are you scared
of my longedy-legs,
sticky web threads,
my eight starey-glarey big eyes?
Is it because
I rappel through the air,
might land in your hair
with my yummity-snack of wrapped flies?
Haiku of the Week
spurt of snowdrops
in a brittle forest—
only snow this year

So great to spend time with you at Highlights! It was a special surprise to be greeted by your postcard when I got home. Thank you! I love the word play in your spider poem. And what a great video from Jone’s students!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thank you, Rose! It was a delight to be at Highlights with you!
Mary Lee
I loved the video for your poem! The choice of music was subtle but oh so perfect!
“spurt” and “brittle” are such perfect words in your haiku.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thank you so much!
Linda Baie
The videos, including yours, have been superb & I like the way you created words for the spider poem. The Snowdrops haiku has me laughing because we have had snow overnight, still flurries. That’s April! Nice you had a great time at Highlights with Irene and Charles. It is a marvelous place!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
I’m so grateful that Jone had her students do the videos. They turned out great!
Linda Mitchell
I loved seeing the photo of you at Highlights! Can’t wait to see your next work out in print.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thank you, Linda! 🙂

Ha! Fun poem and video, Marcie – and it sounds like you all spun some wonderful webs of words up in Honesdale.
(Your haiku would pair nicely with Bridget’s post today – sigh.)
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
We did some word spinning, that’s for sure!
Laura Purdie Salas
Eeeeuw! Spiders in my hair! Any nightmares tonight, I’m blaming on you! What a fun poem :>D Thanks, too, for reminding me of my 1/3-finished Oliver book I’ve tucked away. I need to get back to it.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Oooh! A tucked-away Oliver book. That sounds wonderful!

“…longedy-legs”! 😀 Love that. The video is fabulous too. What fun!
And I can’t wait to read more about the workshop. I’m sure it was fantastic!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Coming up this week: more about the workshop!
Bridget Magee
Your spider poem is good reminder to Creep Calm and Carry On, Marcie! I, too, look forward to hearing about your Highlights adventure. 🙂
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Thanks, Bridget. More to come on the Highlights adventures.

The video snippet of the little girl shaking her hair captures exactly how I felt about the TICK this past week! Loved that we got to finally meet, Marcie!
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Aack! That awful tick! It was so great to see you. My garden spider is sitting on my porch. I smile and think of you every time I go outside!
Laura Shovan
What fun, Marcie! I love the video poem. I have to admit, I think those starey-glarey big spider eyes are gorgeous.
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Yes, I think so too!
